What is a Mastectomy Prosthesis?

A breast prosthesis is an artificial and removable breast form that is used by patients after going through mastectomy. It can be worn against the skin, attached to the chest wall, or inside the mastectomy bra to take in the form of all or parts of the patient’s surgically removed breasts. This type of prosthetic device is customized to comfortably fit while complementing the patient’s figure. Considered as the fastest and most cost-effective way to fill in the space where the breast or parts of it once were, a breast prosthesis can be worn regularly or used as a temporary solution before the patient goes into breast reconstruction surgery. It comes in various materials, such as foam, silicone gel, or fiberfill, with a plethora of shapes, sizes, colors, and weights. When professionally designed and fabricated, a pair of breast prosthesis should be able to fit the patient seamlessly and appear like normal breasts when worn inside.
